Understanding Nausea in Early Pregnancy

For the 50 to 90 percent of women who experience nausea in early pregnancy out there, you may be seeking some kind of remedy. If this is your first child you have to know ahead of time that nausea during any trimester of your pregnancy is normal and can be expected. When a woman is pregnant the hormones inside of her are pretty much bouncing off the walls and those fluctuation hormones often upset the stomach. Sometimes the nausea is accompanied by sickness commonly referred to as “morning sickness”, although it can occur throughout the whole day and not just in the morning.

Remedies for Nausea in Early Pregnancy

There are dozens of old wife’s tales that have been passed down to help with nausea and quite a few of them work. However, you have to keep in mind that no two women will experience the exact same pregnancy so what works for some will not always work for you. Be prepared to try out a few of these methods to help calm your nausea and morning sickness during the first trimester.

  • Crackers and other salty snacks can help calm the stomach acid
  • Stay hydrated with water and juice but try to avoid milk and other dairy products a lot
  • Go for a short walk
  • Try laying down to help calm your body
  • Avoid things that stress you out because stress can upset stomach acid

Medical Remedies for Nausea in Early Pregnancy

Unfortunately, most women just have to deal with their first trimester nausea and morning sickness. Doctor’s are able to prescribe medication for nausea and sickness that gets to be too severe but this is typically done in the second and third trimesters rather than for nausea in early pregnancy. Nausea for the most part is pretty controllable but in some women they have trouble getting through their typical day because of feeling sick or even throwing up. When nausea and morning sickness starts to really affect your daily life, you may want to ask your doctor is there are any medications he or she would feel comfortable prescribing you. There are not many medications that are safe during pregnancy but there are a couple that can be helpful for controlling your nausea.

Women younger in age tend to experience a longer period of nausea and morning sickness than average simply because their bodies are still developing themselves on top of creating a new life. Keeping in mind that these symptoms, as miserable as they can be, will be over soon is important. Nausea in early pregnancy is very common so just do what you can to control in and when it is time for your new arrival to show up, you will look back and say that it is all worth it. When your nausea seems to be offset by a smell or other surrounding you should take notice to that so you can avoid it in the future.
